Praying the Word of God: How to Face Giants & Mountains

Praying The Word Of GodLearn how to pray the Word of God and stand on His promises to face your GoliathPraying the word of God works when you face giants and mountains. Sometimes we face big-time problems that need quick prayer answers. During one of these periods, I was facing a difficult situation. I was in a David versus Goliath battle and needed God’s help in a hurry. To me, it seems God is never in a hurry.

There is a song; He is An On Time God. Maybe you have sung it in church. Yes, God’s on time, but you might agree, our on-time is much different sometimes than His on time.

I was taught to pray the Word of God. That's the power of prayer in action. Praying the Word of God is the beginning of prayer answers because faith starts where the will of God is known. Praying the Word of God means to find a Scripture in the Bible, a promise of God, that pertains to your situation. The one I found was, “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith” (Mark 11:23). There was my promise. Speak to the mountain, nothing doubting, and the mountain would move.

The Goliath I was facing was a mountain that needed moving out of the way. According to the Word of God, my giant problem could be removed by believing prayer. The only problem was my mountain was not moving. “What was the problem?” I wondered.

The more I prayed, the worse things got. I found myself, not only dealing with a real giant problem but also an internal struggle with the Word of God. I was in a wrestling match with the promise of God. The grappling reminded me of Jacob wrestling with the angel of the Lord. “And Jacob was left alone, and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day” (Genesis 32:24). Finally, Jacob got the victory. “And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed” (Genesis 32:28).

I felt like Jacob before the victory, all alone wrestling with the Word of God. On one side of the ring was knowing God’s Word was true and the other side of the ring a giant that would not go away. That left me in the middle, determined to stand on the promise of God.

The more I prayed, the farther God seemed to be. I upped my prayer intensity and perseverance. Round after round continued. I remembered the Scripture, “Come now and let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:11). The more I pleaded my case before the Lord the quieter heaven got. I was desperate. More and more I prayed, determined to get an answer from God even locking myself in prayer for three days. At last, I got the answer.

Sometimes the answer you get from God is not the one you wanted.

I was exhausted because my mountain would not move. The Holy Spirit answered my prayer, “Son, you have to go through this. You can either go through it with me or without me, but you have to go through it.”

There it was, the reason for my prayer struggle. My situation was not a mountain that could be prayed away. I had to face my giant. God was slow to answer me because I was not ready for the answer.

My choice was to go through the situation with Him. Then the Lord reminded me of His promise, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalms 46:1). With that answer, I stopped trying to pray my Goliath away. It was time to put on the armor of God and go to war. A few weeks later I faced Goliath and won. You can too.
