Oral Roberts (1918–2009) was an American Christian evangelist and faith healer who rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s. His charismatic preaching style and miraculous healing claims made him a household name throughout the world.
Roberts was born Granville Oral Roberts in Ada, Oklahoma, on January 24, 1918. His father, Rev. Ellis Roberts, was a Pentecostal preacher, and his mother, Claudius, worked as a midwife and nurse. Roberts was the oldest of five children and was raised in a strict religious home. At the age of 17, Roberts underwent a religious conversion experience, which he described as a "second birth," and this experience convinced him to become a minister.
After high school, Roberts attended Oklahoma Baptist University and then Phillips University, where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1942. After college, Roberts served as an associate pastor in various churches in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
In 1947, Roberts launched his own ministry and began preaching throughout the United States and Canada. He quickly gained a reputation for his ability to heal the sick and bring people back from the brink of death. Roberts also had a knack for captivating an audience with his powerful sermons and passionate preaching.
By the late 1950s, he was one of the most recognizable figures in the evangelical movement. In the 1960s, Roberts achieved even greater fame and success. He established the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association (OREA) and the Oral Roberts University (ORU), which opened in 1965.
Roberts was also featured on the cover of Time Magazine and appeared on numerous television programs, including The Tonight Show and the Phil Donahue Show. In addition to his television appearances, Roberts also wrote dozens of books, including the best-selling "Expect a Miracle" and "The Miracle of Seed Faith."
He was also involved in several humanitarian efforts, such as the "God Can Do It Again" campaign, which raised money for medical research projects. Oral Roberts is a true pioneer of the faith-healing movement.
Through his powerful preaching, his humanitarian efforts, and his many books, Roberts has inspired millions of people around the world. His message of hope and healing continues to resonate with believers of all backgrounds. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
