Understand the spiritual life in Christ Jesus and how the spiritual nature of the Word of God is essential for a God-kind of life. Know how you were made alive through the new birth experience and how your spirit is the heart that believes and speaks. Be aware of the environ of words you have been exposed to and how they have influenced your life. Realize that through renewing your mind, you can tap into the life-giving power of the Word of God and be led by the Holy Spirit.
Words, you use them every day. With them, you communicate and make your thoughts known. Words provide insight into how you feel, what you’re thinking, and even where you’re going. Words can speak of the past, the present, or the future. Some words make you feel terrific, and other words make you feel terrible. There are happy words, angry words, faithful words, and fearful words. Words are amazing.
Just as you have words, God has words. In fact, the Bible is a book of words, God’s words. To understand God is to understand his words. To understand life is to understand the life-giving nature of his words. To live in the fullness of life is to abide in his words. And to change your life is to speak his words. Words have meaning.
Jesus, commenting on words, said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Notice the life Christ referred to consists not only of bread but the very words of the living God. This indicates that his words define the quality of your life. We could call this the God kind of life or the Spirit led life. Apostle Paul wrote, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14).
To understand the spiritual life in Christ Jesus is to understand the spiritual nature of the word of God. “God is a Spirit; and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).
Understanding spiritual life and words are important because you are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Through your born again spirit you access the spiritual world and with your body the natural world. Your soul is your mind, will, imagination, emotion, reasoning, and intellect. Knowing how God made you will help you grasp this truth and focus on renewing your mind (soul) thereby positioning you to be led by the Holy Spirit through your spirit.
MADE ALIVE
Before you were born again, your spirit was dead in trespasses and sin. That’s called spiritual death. You were unable to be directed by the Holy Spirit. At salvation, however, a miracle occurred, and your spirit was made alive with Christ. You were translated out of spiritual death into spiritual life. You became a new creature. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This new birth experience connected you to the spirit of God and qualified you to be Holy Spirit led.
Your spirit is sometimes referred to as the heart. “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:10). This reveals the connection between heart and words or, said another way, spirit and words. The heart believes and the mouth speaks. Another Scripture declares, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). And another speaks of the “hidden man of the heart” (1 Peter 3:4). The hidden man of the heart is the real you. That’s your spirit.
We are going to focus on words, not just any words, but words of life. God, the Word, is a life-giving spirit. Anything connected to him lives and prospers. He is the vine, and you are the branches.
Jesus taught, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5). To understand the life-giving power of God’s word requires you to renew your mind. In other words, to change the way you think.
ENVIRONS
Since you were a child your life has been influenced, fashioned and engineered by experience, environment, teaching, friends, family, associations, and words, millions of words.[1] Through these words came (right or wrong) a belief system and how you see yourself and the world around you. This belief system affects your life in every way because what you believe becomes truth to you. It’s this environ the word of God engages with the promise of spirit and life. Scripture declares,
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
Your thoughts frame the world you live in. Notice how the word of God is able to divide your soul from your spirit, your thoughts from your heart. Only the word of God is able to do this. As you change the way you think, you are less inclined to allow emotions to influence your decisions while your spirit becomes more sensitive to the gentle leading of the Holy Spirit.{module WORDS: Your Path To A Better Life Now Value Kit }
DESIGNED TO RESPOND
As we discuss the power of words, remember that God designed your spirit to respond to His Spirit. Scripture says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16). The word “itself” is not translated correctly; it should read the Spirit “himself” beareth witness with our spirit.
Your spirit will respond to the Holy Spirit because it was fashioned that way because you were created in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26). In other words, your spirit can receive and know things that your mind doesn’t grasp at the same speed or at all. This is because the word of God is first spiritual and moves from the spiritual realm into the natural realm. This is apparent with the person of Christ who was the first spirit to become flesh. It is written, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). Immanuel means God with us.
In contrast, Adam was first flesh that became spirit after God breathed life (not air) into him. “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). The point is God designed your spirit to respond to His Spirit. This design is your greenlight to be led by the Holy Spirit.
