The invention of the Gutenberg Press in the 1500s changed the world. The printing press enabled books to be printed instead of handwritten. The first book printed was the Bible and the second was a book written by Cicero in 44 BC titled On Obligations. Cicero was a Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, and philosopher. His book was a guide for ethical values for aspiring politicians. Something every politician should read today. In the book, Cicero speaks of four essential virtues first espoused by Plato, a Greek philosopher from Athens. These virtues were:
Wisdom
Justice
Courage
Moderation.
All four of these virtues are found in the word of God. God says, for example, wisdom is the principal thing. Principal means of first importance. “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly” (Proverbs 2:6-7).
Christ also instructed his disciples to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. Said another way, put first the kingdom of God and His justice. Regarding courage, God instructed his leaders such as Joshua to be of good courage. “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:9). And in moderation, he said, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (James 4:10).
Peter also wrote about virtues such as faith, knowledge, patience, godliness, kindness, and charity. He said, “For if these things be in you, and abound, you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:8).
The pursuit of wisdom is important to the disciple of Christ. Again, God says that wisdom is the principal thing, “Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honor when thou dost embrace her” (Proverbs 4:8).
The disciple of Christ is called to a life of virtue with a powerful promise. The Holy Spirit declares, "If you do these things you shall never fall."
