Seeking God Diligently: Overcoming Apathy and a "Take it or Leave it" Mentality

The Importance Of Pursuit 1Not everyone goes after the things of God. Some have a take it or leave it mentality.

Remember those that spied out the Promised Land, the land flowing with milk and honey? They saw that the promise of God was good but focused on the giants instead of God. They said, “And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:33). In other words, the Promised Land was good but not worth the fight. In contrast, Caleb had a different spirit. He was different. He was after it. “And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it” (Numbers 13:30). Sadly, these people were not willing to fight the fight of faith so they perished in the wilderness.

Pursuit is vital when it comes to pleasing God. Scripture says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). The Holy Spirit looks for those of a different spirit. He loves determination.

  • Blind Bartimaeus would not stop calling on Jesus even when the crowd tried to silence him.

  • The woman with the issue of blood pressed through the crowd to touch the hem of his garment.

  • Peter stepped out of the boat in the midst of a stormy sea.

  • Friends broke up the roof to get their friend into the presence of God.

  • David spoke surrounded by fear, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine?”

Pursuit is visible. It overcomes apathy, lukewarmness, and a take it or leave it spirit. No one can receive what they are not willing to pursue. As already said, God responds to pursuit.
