Exploring the Spiritual Law of Seedtime and Harvest: How God's Word Prevails Despite Climate Change

Seed Time Climate Change 1There are some concerns about climate change endangering the planet and civilization itself. Recently, a teenager was interviewed on our local news station who said that the State of Florida would be underwater in a few years. It was a surprise to hear such a dire warning. The question is, “How did she draw such a conclusion?”

As Disciples of Christ, we have an advantage over the local news stations by looking into the future through the written word of God. Scripture gives a more hopeful prediction saying, “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). Got it? Weather will continue to be dynamic, meaning it will always be changing. Nevertheless, call the weather what you will, climate change, global warming, or the four seasons, there will always be seedtime and harvest. This truth of seedtime and harvest has to do with the natural but it also deals with the spiritual.

In the Parable of the Sower, Christ teaches that the Sower sows the seed of the word of God. Seed is sown on various grounds, (the wayside, stony ground, and among thorns) with only one type of soil producing a harvest. Jesus was not giving a lesson in agriculture practices. No, he was teaching a principle of the kingdom of God. We could call it a spiritual law of the kingdom, the law of seedtime and harvest.

In another parable Christ teaches about the Sower sowing the seed, going to bed, waking up, and finding that the seed sprouted. “So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how” (Mark 4:26-27).

This statement is significant. Again, it says of the Sower, “He knoweth not how.” This means the seed knows what to do. How exciting! The good news is that you, the Sower, only need to speak the word of God into your situation, sit back, and let the word do what it knows to do. Something is amazing about this law of the Kingdom. Speak the Word and let it do its work. As long as the earth remains God's spiritual laws will work on your behalf. Neither climate change or global warming will not stop the kingdom of God.
