Develop Your Spiritual Discernment with the Gift of Discernment

How is your discernment? Some people walk blindly through life with no spiritual discernment. Discernment is the ability to perceive what's happening around you. Some call it intuition and others call it suspicion. Intuition is instinctive-knowing and suspicion is an impression. Both are out of the soul of man, not the spirit of man. Spiritual discernment is just that, spiritual discernment.

One of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit is the gift of discerning of spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10). This is a supernatural ability to discern what's happening in the unseen spirit world or perhaps within a human spirit.

There are several types of spirits. There are demon spirits, angelic spirits, human spirits, and the Holy Spirit. All of these are different. If the Holy Spirit thinks it necessary for you to discern a spirit then the gift of discerning of spirits will operate. This operation is according to His will and not yours.

Apostle Paul had a situation with a young woman. She continued to follow Paul throughout the village saying things like these men are servants of God. The more this woman spoke the more Apostle felt uneasy. The Bible reports what happened.

“And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour” (Acts 16:16-18).

Something was wrong and Paul was picking it up in his spirit. What the woman was saying was true but the spirit of the message was wrong. Soon, however, Paul picked it up in his spirit and commanded it to come out. Spiritual discernment manifested and he cast the spirit out of the girl. This is spiritual discernment in action.

The Bible says to test the spirits. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). To try the spirits means to examine them fully and carefully. Keep your spiritual discernment sharp.
