In the world today, it is not uncommon to find people who attach themselves to the label of "Christian" but have no visible evidence of living a lifestyle of faith. To be true Christians and disciples of Christ, it is important to display a lifestyle of faith and values that reflect the Word of God, and not rely solely on labels.
Some carry the label "Christian," but don't have the lifestyle to back it up. Labels provide identity and association. For disciples of Christ, however, a "lifestyle" is a manner of living that reflects the values of the Word of God. Values such as faith, truth, justice, forgiveness, family, and church are examples. Lifestyle gives proof that one's label is valid. It's when the lifestyle offers no proof that labels are of no importance. Some ask why values are important. Values are important because they drive behavior.
As already said, some call themselves Christians and are proud to wear the label "Christian," but there is little visible evidence. In other words, they may have the label but don't display any Christian values. Faith in God is visible. You can see it in the actions of people. The woman with the issue of blood touched the hem of Christ's garment, Peter stepped out of the boat, and a widow made a cake for the prophet. These are all demonstrations of faith in God.
Jesus made it clear that his disciples are the light of the world, and that light should not be hidden. He declared, "You are the light of the world." A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light to all that are in the house. "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:14–16).
Disciples of Christ should always be aware that the light of the gospel needs to be visible in their lives. This means they should display a lifestyle of faith. Christians should be careful about holding fast to vain labels and let the light of the word of God shine through them.
Again, many say they are Christians and followers of Christ, but they don't have the lifestyle to prove it. John the Baptist said with boldness, "Bring forth fruit that is consistent with repentance." In other words, "let your lives prove your change of heart" (Matthew 3:8, AMP).
To summarize. Avoid worthless labels and embrace the lifestyle of faith. Labels may bring identity, but lifestyle reveals it.
