To do this, you need to comprehend the power of words, music, and meditation and how they can plant seeds of faith in your heart and soul. For example, you can use songs and singing, meditation, and confession to plant the seed of God’s word in your heart and increase your faith. Scripture encourages you to “keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Embrace the word of God and learn how to walk in your spiritual design.
Spirituality is part of your design. Your spirit was designed by God with creative abilities beyond your wildest imagination. To understand yourself, you need to comprehend how God made you.
You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. Your spirit is the part of you that was born again. Your spirit is the real you. Your soul, by contrast, hosts your mind and emotions. Your mind is not you. Your mind is only a tool that processes information. Your spirit is the real you. Once you understand this, it will help you mature spiritually at a faster pace.
Your heart and soul are intertwined together. It’s like the fingers on both your hands tightly interlocked around each other. Sometimes it’s hard to tell which hand they are attached. It can be the same with your heart and soul. It’s not easy to know what part of you is trying to be in control. The word of God, however, has the ability to separate your spirit from your soul. This aids being led by your spirit instead of your emotions.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
EMOTIONS
The soul is that part comprising your emotions. Emotions can drive you crazy. Emotions can take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. One moment you're up, feeling good about your future, and the next moment you're down, feeling discouraged about your future. Nowhere in the Bible are you supposed to be led by soulish emotions and feelings. Scripture says, “The just shall live by faith” (Hebrews 10:38).
The mature Disciple understands the importance of living out of their spirit and not their emotions. They do that by feeding their spirits with faith-filled words and starving their emotions by refusing to speak any negative feelings. Words are destinations. Your tongue was fashioned by God to steer your life. That’s why you need to guard your words.
Jesus connected words with the heart, “For of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Luke 6:45). This means what’s in your heart your mouth will speak. That’s why you should guard your heart by being careful what seed you plant in it. Words are seeds. Your heart cultivates words. Words have power. Words contain life and words contain death.
GROWING SEED
Your heart was designed by God to germinate seed. To germinate means to produce, make, create, and cause to grow. Scripture makes it understandable, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). You want to safeguard your heart because it’s a type of soil. Soil grows seed.
What kind of seed do you want your heart to grow? “A good man, out of the good treasure of the heart, bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things” (Matthew 12:35). Give your heart an assignment. Plant some good seed in it.
As already said, the heart is designed by God to germinate any seed planted in it. This is an excellent truth, you can plant seed in your heart and faith will cause it to grow.
SEED, SOIL, AND FAITH
The word of God is the seed, your heart is the soil, and your faith is the water. Scripture says with the heart man believes and with his mouth confession is made unto salvation. The heart will always germinate the seed of faith.
Remember the woman with the issue of blood? She planted a healing seed in her heart. “For she said within herself; If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour” (Matthew 9:21-22). Look at the pattern.
- She planted words in her heart. (She said within herself.)
- She decreed how and when she would receive. (When touching His garment.)
- Her heart germinated a miracle of healing in her body. (“Thy faith hath made thee whole.”)
PLANTING SEEDS
The same thing happened with some blind men. “And when he came into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it” (Matthew 9:28-30).
The seed planted in the heart, not the head, produces the harvest.
- “Thy faith hath made thee whole” (Matthew 9:22).
- “According to your faith be it unto you (Matthew 9:30).
- “As thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee” (Matthew 8:13).
Your heart will always sprout the seed of faith. Jesus said, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7).
Words can be planted in your heart through songs, meditation, and confession. Scripture says, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19).
SONGS AND SINGING
Songs and singing are powerful ways to plant words in your heart. Music has power. Music is an arrangement of sounds produced by singers or musical instruments. These musical arrangements have the ability to change feelings and moods. Music creates atmospheres. These atmospheres can be festive, somber, ominous, or entertaining. Music at a funeral is uniquely different than music at a theme park, club, church, or in your prayer closet. Music can make you feel joyful, or make you feel sad.
Words added to music are dynamic. Words can be planted in your heart through repetition. What songs do you listen to and sing? What are the words? What seeds are you planting in your heart? Remember, life and death is in the power of the tongue. Scripture says,
“See then that you walk circumspectly (mindful of potential consequences), not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:15-20).
Songs are a great way to plant seeds. Use songs to your advantage. Avoid worldly, carnal, and sensual songs and embrace Scriptural songs. Sing songs that are filled with the benefits of your salvation. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing (encouraging) one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16).
MEDITATION
Meditation is another way to plant the seed of God’s word in your heart. To meditate means to ponder, muse, devise and think deeply. Meditation is a way to plant seeds. This is a fantastic Scripture, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” (Joshua 1:8). This means to ponder on the word of God over and over again. Meditation will write God’s word on the tablets of your heart.
When you meditate on Scripture, it helps you memorize Bible verses, builds your faith, and plants truth in your spirit. The Psalmists said, “I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word” (Psalms 119:15-16).
When you meditate, you mull over again and again Bible truth. Meditation is a process that plants the seed of God’s word. Apostle Paul presented this instruction. “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:6-8).
CONFESSION
Confessing the promises of God over your life is another way to plants seeds and builds faith. Recall that faith waters the seed of the word of God in your heart. Scripture declares, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). Where you find the word of God, you will find faith. And where you find faith, you will find expectation. Confessing the word of God over life in faith produces results. As already said, your heart was designed to grow seed. So as you pray in faith seed is comes alive and produces a harvest. “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24). Seed springs forth when you say it and believe it. Words can be planted, and words produce a harvest. It is written, “With the heart man believes and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:10).
Apostle Paul wrote that hearts and words are connected. “We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; We also believe, and therefore speak” (2 Corinthians 4:13). Confession is connected to proclamations, decrees, and declarations. Scripture says, “Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways” (Job 22:28). Plant faith-filled words in your heart by confessing the promises of God over your life.
