The Healing Power of Words

Powerful Words Ask, Seek, KnockWords are the most powerful force in the universe - learn how to use them to heal and not harm. Words are filled with life or death, and their power can be used for healing. The Bible teaches us to renew our minds with the life-giving Word of God in order to combat our negative, fallen nature. Scripture also reminds us to "speak a word in season to him that is weary" (Isaiah 50:4). We can learn from Jesus' encounter with the Roman Centurion, who knew that Jesus didn't need to be present for his servant to be healed - all He had to do was speak the word. By meditating on the Word of God and becoming more word conscious, we can change the way we think and speak and reap the blessings of healing words.

Powerful words can help heal or make sick. Scripture declares, “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh” (Proverbs 4:20-22). Words are the most powerful force in the universe. The words you speak are filled with life or death.

It’s astonishing how some Christians don’t understand the words coming out of their mouths are producing a harvest. Some words, like seeds, bring forth a good crop and other words, like seeds, bring forth a bad crop.

Your fallen Adamic nature is a negative nature. That negative nature is carnal, earthly, sensuous, and hostile toward the things of the Spirit. That’s why you must renew your mind with the life-giving Word of God.

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh, but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” (Romans 8:5-7)

Apostle Paul wrote, “Put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness” (Ephesians 4:24). Negative thoughts war against your soul. They are enemies and must be taken captive. You know when they are taken captive when you refuse to speak their thoughts and speak God’s thoughts. The Bible says, “Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24). Learning to change the way you think will help you improve the way you speak.

Scripture declares you shall have whatsoever you sayeth, not whatsoever you meaneth. God says, “There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18 AMP). As already said, words are filled with life or death.

IGNORANCE

Ignorance is costly. There is a difference between an ignorant person and a stupid person. The ignorant person doesn’t know but wants to learn. The stupid person doesn’t know and doesn’t want to learn.

God says, “My people are gone into captivity because they have no knowledge: and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst” (Isaiah 5:13). All of us are ignorant somewhere. That’s okay provided you don’t stay ignorant. The wise man follows Paul’s instruction to his spiritual son Timothy, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

Anywhere you are not learning you are failing. That’s why we give thanks to God for sending us the Holy Spirit, providing fivefold ministry gifts, and leaving us a book of instruction, the Bible.

In the word of God are all the treasures of wisdom and understanding. It is written, “In him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28). By meditating on the word of God, you become more word aware. Becoming more word conscience is the beginning of change. This is the first step in changing the way you speak.

HEALING WORDS

Jesus demonstrated the power of healing words when meeting a Roman centurion. A centurion’s servant was home and very sick. Apparently, the soldier knew, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him” (Acts 10:38). Jesus responded to the soldier’s request saying that he would come and heal him. To the amazement of Jesus, the centurion replied, there is no need for you to come to my house. Speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. Read the testimony,

“And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed” (Matthew 8:5-8).

Jesus marveled at this man’s great faith. “And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour” (Matthew 8:13).

This encounter with the Centurion and Christ contains a wondrous lesson. Words are activated by faith. Words can be sent. Words are filled with healing. Scripture says, “The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary” (Isaiah 50:4).
