The Fear of the Lord: Unlocking Miracles, Signs, Wonders, and Kingdom Authority

Miracles, signs, and wonders. Jesus knew it would take the baptism of the Holy Ghost to advance a Church that the gates of hell could not prevail against. After his resurrection, he told his disciples “they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father…. For John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence” (Acts 1:4-5). That “promise of the Father” was the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is the spirit of power and might.

I’m convinced Christ wants a Church full of Holy Ghost filled warriors equipped and empowered to invade, occupy, and influence this world. Every church and every believer should be walking in Kingdom authority and manifesting the Kingdom of God with signs, wonders, and miracles.

Jesus declared when you pray, pray like this. “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Heaven is not just a place, but it is also a position. Scriptures confirms this, “And hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6). That heavenly place is the commanding heights. In that place, you and I draw our Kingdom authority. From the Holy Ghost, we draw spiritual power, might and the ability to walk in miracles.

SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD

Jesus said He would build His church, and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. That governing Church, His Church, would be filled with ruling and reigning disciples (a priesthood of kings) that would need Holy Ghost power to succeed.

There are many benefits of the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Isaiah said there were seven operations of the Holy Ghost. “And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD” (Isaiah 11:2).

• The Spirit of Wisdom

• The Spirit of Understanding

• The Spirit of Counsel

• The Spirit of Might

• The Spirit of Knowledge

• The Fear of the Lord

All of these are available to you after the Holy Ghost has come upon you. Of this list, the fear of the Lord is among the most important. The fear of the Lord is reverence for God and the things of God. A person that reverences the Lord is concerned about how God feels. Apostle Paul wrote, “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30).

A Christian can never experience the fullness of the Holy Ghost without a deep reverence and respect for the things of God. Without the fear of the Lord, there can be no spiritual wisdom. Wisdom is sound thinking, the ability to make right decisions, shrewdness, prudence, discretion, wise judgment, common sense, and the ability to rightfully divide the Word of God and apply it to real-life situations.

There are certain behaviors that are the antithesis of the fear of the Lord:

INDIFFERENCE

Indifference, a take it or leave it attitude, never receives anything from the Holy Ghost. If you are indifferent, apathetic or lukewarm, you are in danger. Christ said, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). If you are hungry, you will eat. If you are not hungry, you will not. The Holy Ghost is looking for an anointing hungry people.

CONVENIENCE

Some have a relationship with God only when it’s convenient. They show up to church when it’s convenient. They pray when it’s convenient. They read the Word when it’s convenient. With these, everything that can get in the way of their relationship with Christ gets in the way. Jesus spoke of people that put business, spouse, or relative before him. One day he held a great feast. All were invited. Some came, some were too busy. God had a word for the inconvenienced. “For I say unto you that none of those men that were bidden (and did not come) shall taste of my supper” (Luke 14:24). The Holy Ghost does not like competing with sporting events, entertainments or your family members. He is God and must come first. “If any man come to me, and [does not love less] his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26).

PROSPERITY

Prosperity can be a hindrance. Thousands press into the things of God when suffering lack. God blesses them, and they come out of poverty. There is a test however after lack, and that’s in prosperity. Scripture declares not to forget the Lord after prosperity.

“And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.”(Deuteronomy 8:17-19)

It’s evident that others don’t reverence God after prosperity because they don’t need anything from him. There are hundreds of examples that could be listed. The bottom line is we must cultivate a reverence for the things of God if we are ever going to experience the fullness of the Holy Ghost in our lives, families, and churches.

VENERATION FOR GOD

You are reading this essay because you have a deep reverence for God. As already said, one of the benefits of the baptism of the Holy Ghost is wisdom. If you want wisdom, then start with the veneration of God. Veneration is reverence, worship, respect, and zeal. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” (Psalms 111:10)

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7)

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)

“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.” (Job 28:28)

THE LAYING ON OF HANDS

There is much scriptural evidence that the fear of the Lord can fall on a person, a city, or even kingdoms. Imagine that. We even read of the fear of the Lord imparted through the ministry of the laying on of hands. This makes sense because the Holy Ghost, the anointing, is the fear of the Lord.

The Holy Ghost came on believers in the New Testament through the ministry of the laying on of hands.

“Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.”(Acts 8:15-17)

“And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.” (Acts 19:6)

“Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.” (2 Timothy 1:6)

Samuel mentioned the fear of the Lord falling on people in the Old Testament. Here he speaks of a dreadful fear that brought agreement, one accord, and unity.

“And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.” (1 Samuel 11:6-7)

Here the fear of the Lord is seen empowering people for battle, victory, and gathering spoils.

“And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.” (2 Chronicles 14:14)

Notice how the fear of the Lord came on all the surrounding kingdoms producing peace.

“And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.” (2 Chronicles 17:10)

The fear of the Lord can be fear, terror, dread, respect, worship, adoration, or reverence. The opposite of the fear of the Lord is:

• Contempt

• Disdain

• Disrespect

• Scorn

• Rejection

• Offense

• Rudeness

• Discourtesy

STABILITY, WISDOM, REVERENCE

The fear of the Lord produces wisdom and stability. For those that love God the fear of the Lord comes from the Holy Ghost. The fear of the Lord leads to other benefits of the baptism of the Holy Ghost including wisdom, might, power, strength, knowledge, and counsel. It also empowers us to walk in signs, wonders, miracles, healing, and deliverance.

Scripture reminds us that Joshua was full of the spirit of wisdom for Moses laid his hands on him. “And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom for Moses had laid his hands upon him” (Deuteronomy 34:9).

The ministry of the laying on of hands continues today. In the New Testament, the fear of the Lord fell on the entire Church. Because of the fear of the Lord apostolic churches in Acts had peace, were comforted, and grew in numbers. “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified, and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied” (Acts 9:31).

WISDOM AND STABILITY

Our world is unstable and suffering from a lack of wisdom, power, might, knowledge, understanding, and counsel. Many in this generation have never seen a miracle or a divine healing. The Holy Ghost wants to change that and show himself strong in this generation.

Scripture declares, “Wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure” (Isaiah 33:6). If you lack wisdom all you have to do is ask because the Holy Ghost is the spirit of wisdom. If you lack power and might ask the Spirit of God for it.

To gain His wisdom, power, and might requires a proper hunger, thirst, and heart-felt respect for Him. For those that love His presence scripture promises, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” Yes, wisdom is the principle thing but you can’t get wisdom without the fear of the Lord. Let’s make sure we are concerned about Him. When the fear of the Lord rest on you signs, wonders, miracles, healing, and deliverance will follow.
