There are two powerful lures of deception: distraction and flattery. The first lure is a distraction. It's common practice that evil manipulators will use distraction as a malicious tool of deception. Deception is used to mislead, hide the truth, and promote a belief or idea that is not true. Deception is often used for personal gain or advantage.
In bullfighting, for example, the matador conceals a sword under his red cape called a muleta. Bulls are color blind but are attracted by the movement of the cape. The more the cape is waved, the more the bull is agitated and charges. You can watch the skill of the matador as he controls the bull with the distraction. Sadly, the bull doesn't know that his death by the sword is hidden within the cape.
In fishing, professionals use various lures to attract fish. There is the surface lure, the crank lure, the walleye lure, the bucktail lure, and hundreds of others. The most successful fishermen try various lures until they find the one that works best. All these lures are designed to deceive the fish.
The second deception is flattery. Flattery is the act of praising someone but is often insincere because they want something from you. Everyone likes a pat on the back for a job well done. Honest praise is much appreciated. Nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, there is deceitful flattery that is used for manipulation.
Christ made it clear that deception would increase in the last days. “Take heed lest any man deceives you: For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And when ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must need be; but the end shall not be yet” (Mark 13:5-7).
Notice Christ made it clear that deception would be a dominant mark of the last days. Discern the lure of distraction and flattery. Gird yourself with the word of God and let no man deceive you with the matador's cape of deception or the deceiver with insincere accolades.
