Discover the benefits of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit can be used to impart spiritual wisdom and revelation. Christ told his revolutionary followers after His resurrection “they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father... For John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence” (Acts 1:4-5).
Jesus said He would build His Church, and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. That governing Church, His Church, would be filled with ruling and reigning disciples (a priesthood of kings) that would need Holy Spirit power to succeed.
BENEFITS OF THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
When nothing works, turn to the spirit of wisdom for help. There are many benefits to the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Some are well known, others a bit obscure. Some of the obvious include:
- Power to witness
- Power against unclean spirits
- Spiritual revelation
- Prophetic operations
- The manifestation of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit
We also know the Holy Spirit is our teacher, comforter, the one that leads and guides, helps us pray as we ought, and unlocks the mysteries of the Kingdom of God.
One benefit not discussed much is wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to apply and use the Word of God to accomplish God’s will in your life. It’s what you need when nothing else seems to work. Wisdom includes prudence, discretion, right decisions, soundness, stability and common sense.
The Apostle Peter wrote that you are part of a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). That is a priesthood of kings. You have heard many times that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords. His lords are rulers. As part of the royal priesthood of kings, you have the mandate to rule (govern) in righteousness through wisdom. Wisdom is gained through the application of the Word of God and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Scripture reveals that the Holy Spirit is the spirit of wisdom. Jesus said he would ask the Father to send him, the spirit of wisdom, to you (John 14:16).
WISDOM AND STABILITY
Scripture also declares, “The LORD is exalted for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with judgment and righteousness. And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure” (Isaiah 33:5-6). Look at these words:
- Judgment
- Righteousness
- Wisdom
- Knowledge
- Stability
- Strength
- Reverence for God
It is written that wisdom and knowledge “shall be the stability of thy times.” A quick glance at the nightly news confirms that our world is degenerating into lawlessness, chaos, corruption and debt. This is the result of secular humanism and rejection of the rule of God within our nations. When a nation, any nation, turns its back on God it opens the door to lawlessness and gradual de-civilization. To turn this degeneration around requires “putting first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). It also requires repentance, submission, prayer and turning from our wicked ways; then God will hear from heaven and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14).
This generation is going to need the wisdom of God. That wisdom is available for you and is made available to all the sons and daughters of God. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).
WISDOM PROMISED BY CHRIST
As already said, Jesus told His disciples to “wait for the promise of the Father.” That promise is the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has a ministry. He is as much God as the Father is God, and the Son is God. He is also apostolic in nature being a sent one. The apostolic nature includes building, restoring and governing. One Holy Spirit operation is equipping and empowering you to fulfill the purpose of Christ in your life.
It’s interesting to discover the baptism of the Holy Spirit includes the divine ability to receive spiritual wisdom that helps you advance the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God includes the culture of the Kingdom. Cultures have many things in common including a language, economic system, government, and arts and literature, etc. Spiritual wisdom also brings stability, sound judgment and the ability to make right decisions.
Jesus said the Holy Spirit would lead and guide you in truth (John 16:5-15). Scripture also declares, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7). A certain measure of wisdom comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Wisdom is the principal thing. That means wisdom needs the first place in your life for success in life and ministry. Wisdom is foundational. Without wisdom you are unstable, make bad judgments and wrong decisions.
THE WISE HEARTED
Wisdom makes one wise having common sense in practical matters. Scripture says, “And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom that they may make Aaron's garments to consecrate him that he may minister unto me in the priest's office” (Exodus 28:3). Notice these wise men were all filled with the Holy Spirit. As filled ones, they received the spirit of wisdom, the Holy Spirit. This proves that wisdom is not confined to schooling, education and experience alone, you need that too, but can be spiritually imparted by the Holy Spirit. Repeatedly, God uses the term “spirit of wisdom,” as one of our benefits of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.{module Spiritual Discernment Strategies Value Kit}
WISDOM FOR THE WORKPLACE
Here is another example of a man named Bezaleel who was filled with the spirit of wisdom and ability to accomplish a trade. Do you need any wisdom where you work?
“See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass”(Exodus 31:2-4).
There is no mention of Bezaleel going to a trade school. When God needed a man to devise cunning works in gold and silver he filled one with the ability to do so. It’s clear this man received wisdom, understanding, knowledge and ability for the workplace. Peter taught that God was “no respecter of persons.” If God can fill Bezaleel with wisdom and ability, he can fill you too.
The Apostle Paul prayed that Christ’s followers would receive the spirit of wisdom. You know now that the spirit of wisdom is the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him” (Ephesians 1:17). Revelation of Christ can only come from the Holy Spirit, not through book knowledge. The Holy Spirit is the one that gives wisdom, understanding, rhema, and revelation.
JOSHUA FILLED WITH WISDOM
Joshua was filled with the spirit of wisdom “after” Moses laid his hands on him. “And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses” (Deuteronomy 34:9). From this scripture, we discover Holy Spirit impartation through the ministry of the laying on of hands.
We know that faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. This means that the benefits of our salvation come by faith and knowledge. In other words, faith is the substance of things hoped for. You can’t have faith for something from God without knowledge. Said another way, we can’t have faith for without knowledge of. If you don’t know what belongs to you, then you have nothing to put your faith on.
After reading these Scriptures and examples, we learn that a measure of wisdom is available to us with the baptism (infilling) of the Holy Spirit. Again, Scripture confirms that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Wisdom.
“And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him (Christ), the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD” (Isaiah 11:2).
Jesus did not anoint himself. He was anointed by the Holy Spirit. Put your faith on receiving wisdom with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Don’t lean on your own understanding but in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path by the leading of the Holy Spirit, your spirit of wisdom.
STEPHEN FILLED WITH WISDOM
Stephen was full of faith and power flowing in great wonders and miracles among the people. He had been chosen as one of the deacons by the Apostles to wait on tables. Scripture says he was “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.”
“Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom whom we may appoint over this business” (Acts 6:3).
Stephen’s ministry was not confined to the inside of the church. He ministered on the streets and his detractors “were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke” (Acts 6:10).
WISDOM BETTER THAN GOLD
Other scriptures speak of wisdom:
“How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!” (Proverbs 16:16)
“He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.” (Proverbs 19:8)
“And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure.” (Isaiah 33:6)
Wisdom is available to those that ask. James said, “If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him” (James 1:5). The Holy Spirit is the spirit of wisdom. As your teacher, he compares spiritual things with spiritual.
“But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:9-11).
Since wisdom is the principle thing, and the Holy Spirit is the spirit of wisdom, then one of the benefits of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is wisdom. Make sure you are filled today. When nothing else works, put your faith on Jesus to baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. As Christians, we have both the Word and the Spirit. It’s time for the divine ability to make right decisions. It’s time to walk in the spirit of wisdom.
