Discernment of Strange Fire: Biblical Strategies for Testing Spiritual Experiences

Try The Spirits - Believe Not Every Spirit - Strange Fire

Strange fire could include unusual manifestations such as gold dust, feathers, gems, and people barking like dogs and roaring like lions.  Some experiences are vivid and compelling, but not from the Holy Spirit. The solution is trying the spirits with Biblical truth. A search through the Scripture gives no evidence that the Holy Spirit used any of these things to confirm God's Word. Others say female angels are healing people. Again, there is no evidence of the existence of female angels in the Word of God.

These are only a few examples of strange fire. Unholy mixtures are dangerous. Aaron's sons tried it and died. "And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD" (Leviticus 10:1-2).

Someone may tell you the things of the Spirit of God can’t be understood. That’s not true because the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth and never violates the written Word of God. The things of the Spirit are judged and understood by the logos, the Bible, and the inner-witness of your spirit. The Holy Spirit is not strange, weird, or mystical. He is the third member of the Trinity. He is a gentleman, statesman, and a loving God that lifts up Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords. He is not a female presence, it, thing, midst, feeling, or some mystical force. {module Spiritual Discernment Strategies Value Kit}
The word of God is your key to understanding spiritual experiences  Scripture says, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12). The Apostle John gave this instruction, try the spirits. He wrote, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).

There is the Holy Spirit, human spirits, and demonic spirits. Spirits are judged according to what they say and how they act. According to the Thayer Greek Lexicon, “try” is the Greek word dokimazō meaning:

1.) To test, examine, prove, and scrutinize.

2.) To see whether a thing is genuine or not.

3.) To recognize as genuine after examination, to approve, and deem worthy.

Some say you shouldn't judge anything. That's dangerous. To ignore, condone, or justify sin or strange fire is not Biblical. To expect a Christian to overlook sin, for example, because “God will judge for it” is wrong. Your leader has the responsibility to feed the sheep and protect the flock from wolves, dogs, goats, foxes, false prophets, evil workers, and the deceived (Matthew 7:15; Acts 20:29; Philippians 3:2; Matthew 25:32; 2 Timothy 4:14). You are also required to be a good steward of the Word of God and discern truth.

According to Jesus, the only way to know what’s inside a person is to know them by their fruits. In other words, to know a person requires looking at the fruit of their actions and life. Some trees bear fruit quickly, and others take more time. The only way to know a person is through fruit inspection. Again, this judging spiritual experiences requires sound Scriptural judgment and examination. Jesus used the word “beware” meaning to use extreme caution because some are wolves in sheep’s clothing. Wolves devour sheep. To protect you, Christ taught to look for good fruit because “a good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.” For someone, anyone, to tell you not to judge spiritual experiences might be protecting a wolf.
