Socialism is a political theory advocating state ownership of industry and capital. The Church must provide answers to socialism and the Biblical limitations of the State. Left unchecked socialism leads to a breakdown in society and leads to national serfdom.
The answer to socialism is grasping personal liberty provided by the King of kings and the Lord of lords. When a nation of people resolve to put first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness they are at once freed from the wickedness of serfdom.
Again, there are forces wanting a one world government, a one world economic system, and a one world religion. All of these will lead to social chaos, tyranny, and de-civilization. The path toward decivilization has already been executed by exchanging our republican form of government into a quasi-democratic form of government.
I’m not speaking of political parties but political structure. America, for example, was a national republic with defined limitations of government found within the U.S. Constitution. In 1861, however, that changed when Abraham Lincoln forbade state succession through bloodshed, the liberty found within a republican structure of government was seriously damaged, and progressively diminished. Up until then, states were able to buffet the threat of an all-powerful Federal government, being able to maintain the threat of unlimited succession found in the Tenth Amendment and voluntary membership within the republic.
After the Civil War, democracy became compulsorily, not voluntarily consented to by its states or citizens. The U. S. Constitution has been ignored by Washington D.C. for years even though the Tenth Amendment states, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Ignoring this defense against democracy (man ruling over man) has led to the slow moral decay and political corruption within our nation and other nations of the world.
Unfortunately, democracy leads to political corruption, political corruption to socialism, and socialism to de-civilization. When the structure of a governing republic (pre 1861), with specific division of powers and a governing Constitution, is replaced by democracy (one man one vote) coupled with Washington D. C. central planning, democracy leads to political corruption, political corruption to socialism (redistribution of wealth from producers to non-producers) and socialism to national poverty, moral collapse, and de-civilization. The Church of Christ can provide answers and solutions but not without an eventual conflict with statism.
THE DANGERS OF DEMOCRACY
Democracy is one man one vote. You can liken democracy to this: two wolves and one sheep voting on what’s for dinner. I strongly suspect lamb chops would be on the menu. Democracy is dangerous. Thomas Jefferson said, “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.” When political leaders need votes, they search out and make promises to the largest groups or voting blocks. If these groups are not productive, they impose a great danger on those that are productive. If they are amoral, they offer danger to those that are moral. To be productive and of moral character is foundational for every Christian and the road toward personal freedom and stability within the fabric of any nation. When people turn away from Christ and seek other gods, morality and character are no longer important. This too leads to moral collapse, chaos, and de-civilization within a nation.
ENTER POLITICAL CORRUPTION
Democracy is the empowerment of political corruption. When democracy usurps the voluntary consent and ability to succeed from the Union by individual States it paves the way for political putrefaction. Corrupt politicians will say anything to seize the reins of power and the nation’s purse. In this, we lose our personal liberties bit by bit. Even the political satirists H. L. Mencken jumped in on this:
“Seldom if ever do politicians get into public office by merit alone, at least in democratic states. Sometimes, to be sure, it happens, but only by a kind of miracle. They are chosen normally for quite different reasons, the chief of which is simply their power to impress and enchant the intellectually underprivileged….Will any of them venture to tell the plain truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about the situation of the country, foreign, or domestic? Will any of them refrain from promises that he knows he can’t fulfill, that no human being could fulfill? Will any of them utter a word, however obvious, that will alarm and alienate any of the huge pack of morons who cluster at the public trough, wallowing in the pap that grows thinner and thinner, hoping against hope? Answer: maybe for a few weeks at the start….But not after the issue is fairly joined, and the struggle is on in earnest…They will all promise every man, woman and child in the country whatever he, she, or it wants. They’ll all be roving the land looking for chances to make the rich poor, to remedy the irremediable, to succor the unsuccorable, to unscramble the unscramble, to dephlogisticate the undephlogisticate. They will all be curing warts by saying words over them, and paying off the national debt with money that no one will have to earn. When one of them demonstrates that twice two is five, another will prove that it is six, six and a half, ten, twenty.
In brief, they will divest themselves from their character as sensible, candid and truthful men, and become simply candidates for office, bent only on collaring votes. They will all know by then, even supposing that some of them don’t know it now, that votes are collared under democracy, not by talking sense but by talking nonsense, and they will apply themselves to the job with a hearty yo-heave-ho. Most of them, before the uproar is over, will actually convince themselves. The winner will be whoever promises the most with the least probability of delivering anything.”
When God created Adam and Eve He blessed them with five blessings. These five blessings are also five expectations. “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion…” (Genesis 1:28). To be fruitful one must be productive. With these five blessings came also the ability to achieve them. Within every person is the divine ability to produce, multiply, increase, subdue, and take dominion. To do nothing is like the wicked servant that buried his talent in the ground. The result was this declaration from Christ:
“His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 25:26-30)
Traveling from San Pedro Sula to Morazan, Honduras, a pastor told me the Church needed an answer to socialism. In the minds of some socialism, government handouts and subsidies were needed to help poor people out of poverty. What some don’t understand is the governments of this world have no money of their own to give anyone. They can only take from one and give to another. They do this without the consent of those that have accumulated a measure of prosperity and wealth through hard work, thrift and prudent investments. Taking from those that have without their consent to give to those that don’t through political maneuvers or democratic ballet is what is known as redistribution of wealth.
The answer to socialism has already been provided by Christ. That answer is personal liberty and the innate God-given ability to produce a product or service that can be sold in the open marketplace. This innate (God-given) ability is what is known as your “means of production.” This means of production is your ability to get wealth. Scripture confirms, “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he (not the state) that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day” (Deuteronomy 8:18).
As Christians, we know there is no lack or scarcity within the Kingdom of God. We also know, “My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). Christ said the Kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21). That means everything you need, personal solutions to the cares of this world and everyday provision are within you.
Jesus told His disciples not to act like gentiles that had no hope in this world being outside the covenant promises of Jehovah but to put first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness; then all these things would be added (Matthew 6:33). Seeking first the Kingdom of God means giving no other gods first place in your life. To do so is spiritual adultery.
Spiritual adultery leads to the collapse of personal liberty. Scripture says, “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage thou shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:2). The word gods is the word “elohiym.” In other words, thou shall have no other protector-providers in your life. To look to a secular state or political leader as your caregiver (protector-provider) is a direct violation of your relationship with the Lord.
Liberty, true liberty comes from Christ alone. To look to other leaders or political systems for provision, even provision by yoking yourself with political corruption through the ballet to take another's personal property (coveting) is a sin. Scripture declares, “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s” (Exodus 20:17).
Again, the answer to socialism is personal liberty as it is written, “If the Son, therefore, shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). Scripture further declares “for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). By the ministry of the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world, you are made free from the penalty of sin, eternal separation from God. With that said, however, through the ministry of the King of kings and Lord of lords, you are now a free man, freed, not only from sin but political tyranny of all kinds.
The door to tyranny, loss of personal liberty and slavery can only take place when men turn away from Christ toward reprobate and corrupted political caregivers. Etienne De La Boetie (1530-1563) was a sixteenth-century French political philosopher, judge, writer, and friend of Montaigne. Writing of personal liberty, he said:
“Liberty is the only joy upon which men do not seem to insist; for surely if they really wanted it, they would receive it. Apparently, they refuse this wonderful privilege because it is so easily acquired. Poor, wretched, and stupid peoples, nations determined on your own misfortune and blind to your own good! You let yourselves be deprived before your own eyes of the best part of your revenues; your fields are plundered, your homes robbed, your family heirlooms taken away. You live in such a way that you cannot claim a single thing as your own; and it would seem that you consider yourselves lucky to be loaned your property, your families, and your very lives.
All this havoc, this misfortune, this ruin, descends upon you not from alien foes, but from the one enemy whom you yourselves render as powerful as he is, for whom you go bravely to war, for whose greatness you do not refuse to offer your own bodies unto death. He who thus domineers over you have only two eyes, only two hands, only one body, no more than is possessed by the least man among the infinite numbers dwelling in your cities; he has indeed nothing more than the power that you confer upon him to destroy you.
Where has he acquired enough eyes to spy upon you, if you do not provide them yourselves? How can he have so many arms to beat you with, if he does not borrow them from you? The feet that trample down your cities, where does he get them if they are not your own? How does he have any power over you except through you? How would he dare assail you if he had no cooperation from you? What could he do to you if you yourselves did not connive with the thief who plunders you, if you were not accomplices of the murderer who kills you, if you were not traitors to yourselves?
You sow your crops in order that he may ravage them, you install and furnish your homes to give him goods to pillage; you rear your daughters that he may gratify his lust; you bring up your children in order that he may confer upon them the greatest privilege he knows, to be led into his battles, to be delivered to butchery, to be made the servants of his greed and the instruments of his vengeance; you yield your bodies unto hard labor in order that he may indulge in his delights and wallow in his filthy pleasures; you weaken yourselves in order to make him the stronger and the mightier to hold you in check.
From all these indignities, such as the very beasts of the field would not endure, you can deliver yourselves if you try, not by taking action, but merely by willing to be free. Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once set freed. I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break into pieces?”
As already said there are forces in this world that want a one world government, a one world economic system, and a one world religion. All of these will lead to social chaos, tyranny, and decivilization. Again the answer to socialism is personal liberty achieved by putting first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.
When the Church starts preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom liberty will appear. Preachers, where is the source of your authority? Does it come from heaven or man? The answer is clear, your authority to represent the King of kings and Ruler of rulers comes from the commanding heights, the throne of God. It’s time for the kings to arise. Preach the Gospel of the Kingdom and don’t look back. To preach the Gospel of the Kingdom means to preach the restoration of all things (Acts 3:21).
