Power of prayer. It’s important for you to discover. Prayer, talking with your heavenly Father, is one of the most powerful things you can do, but the power of prayer, effective prayer needs to be learned. Powerful prayer is Biblical prayer. The Apostles asked the Lord to teach them how to pray. His teaching is found in the Lord's Prayer (Luke 11). Apparently, the Apostles knew prayer was important and wanted to have an effective prayer life. Effective prayer, powerful prayer, is sincere, heartfelt prayer, praying the Word of God, and praying in other tongues.
Sincere prayer is first and foremost heartfelt and honest. King David wasn't' perfect, but is remembered as a man after God's own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). Prayer can be likened to building a relationship. Relationships are personal, intimate, built, nurtured, and trusting. Relationships are connections between two people. Many want to know how to pray. I believe we should start through simple day-to-day communication and build from there. In the beginning, prayer may seem uncomfortable. It's uncomfortable because you haven't done it, but after a while, you will start to develop a great prayer life.
PRAYING THE WORD OF GOD
Praying the Word of God is essential to a robust prayer life. One Scripture gives us an answer to effective and powerful prayer. "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him"(1 John 5:14-15). Did you get it? You can rest assured if you pray the Word of God He hears you and answers you! So if you want to build your confidence pray the Word of God over your life.
This is a beautiful truth. Faith begins where the will of God is known. Remember the Scripture that says, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him"(Hebrews 11:6)? This lets us know when we pray the Word of God, (Scriptural promises), God hears us, and if He hears us, we have the answer to our prayers. This is why it's important for you to learn to pray the will of God. The will of God is found in the Word of God, the Scriptures. If you are sick, for example, pray "by His stripes I am healed" (1 Peter 2:24). If you need finances pray, "My God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). If you need favor pray, "I have favor with God and man" (Proverbs 3:4). The bottom line is this, when you pray the Word of God, the Word of God is doing the work (Isaiah 55:11).
PRAYING IN OTHER TONGUES
Praying in an unknown tongue is powerful prayer. Apostle Paul said, "If I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth" (1 Corinthians 14:14). You are a spirit. You have a soul (mind, emotions, imaginations). You live in a body. In other words, God is a spirit, and you are a spirit. With your spirit, you connect to God. It's your spirit, that was once dead in sin, but after you became a New Creature, became alive unto God. Jesus said it was to our advantage that He go away because He would send us the Holy Spirit. "Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you" John 16:7). Comforter, Greek paraklētos, means Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby. It also means one that gets the job done!
There are many things praying in other tongues accomplishes such as:
Praying in other tongues is praying God's perfect will.
Apostle Paul wrote, "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God" Romans 8:26-27).
Praying in other tongues magnifies God.
"And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? (Acts 10:45-47).
Praying in other tongues prays the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven in your life (Matthew 13:11).
"But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither has entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God"(1 Corinthians 2:9-10).
Praying in other tongues strengthens your born again spirit.
"But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost"(Jude 1:20).
Praying in other tongues is the result of being baptized by the Holy Spirit.
"Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost" (Acts 8:14-17).
This baptism is a gift from Christ to you. You can't earn it, buy it, or work for it. The baptism is free to all Christ's disciples that desire and ask Him for it.
Effective prayer, powerful prayer, is sincere, heartfelt prayer, praying the Word of God, and praying in other tongues.
