Dangers of Big Government

Dangers of big governmentWhile it is important to recognize the diversity of political opinions among Christians, many who favor smaller government often do so based on principles derived from their religious teachings.

One reason is the emphasis on personal responsibility and charity within Christian doctrine. Many Christians believe that individuals and local communities are best suited to care for the needs of the poor and vulnerable, rather than large, bureaucratic government structures. This perspective aligns with the idea that charity should be a personal, voluntary act of love and compassion, rather than a mandatory governmental function.

Additionally, the principle of subsidiarity, which is prominent in various Christian traditions, advocates that matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest, or least centralized competent authority. This principle suggests that decisions should be made as locally as possible, empowering families and communities rather than distant governmental entities.

Moreover, there is often concern about moral and religious freedoms. A smaller government is perceived to be less likely to interfere with religious practices and more likely to allow individuals and church communities to live out their values without undue restriction. Thus, Christians who prefer a smaller government typically advocate for a society where freedom and responsibility are balanced, with an emphasis on moral decision-making within local contexts.
