The Wise Man and the Foolish Man
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by life's storms and uncertainties? Are you longing for a secure and stable foundation in life? Look no further, for Jesus offers us the perfect foundation on which to build our lives. With Jesus and his teachings as our foundation, we can find strength, stability, and security - even in the midst of life's storms. In Matthew 7:24, Jesus is teaching his disciples and the people who were listening that wisdom and faithfulness in following his teachings will bring stability and strength. The "wise man" is likened to a man who built his house on a rock, while the "foolish man" is likened to one who built his house on sand. The rock represents Jesus’ teachings, and the sand represents anything that is contrary to his teachings.
The wise man who built his house upon the rock was able to withstand the elements and the storms of life, as the rock provided a strong and secure foundation for his house. Even as the rains descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon the house, it did not fall because it was built on a solid foundation.
Matthew 7:24-28 declares, "Whoever hears and acts on my words will be likened to a wise man who built his house on a rock:(25) And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house; and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock. (26) And every one who heareth my words but does not do them shall be likened to a fool who built his house on sand.(27) And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house; and it fell; and great was the fall of it. (28) And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at his doctrine:"
On the other hand, the foolish man who built his house on the sand was not as fortunate. The sand was unable to provide a stable foundation, and the house fell when the storms of life hit it. The result was a great fall, showing the foolishness of relying on anything apart from Jesus’ teachings. From this passage of scripture, we can learn to build our lives on the solid foundation of Jesus’ teachings. We can find continued strength and stability in Him, even when the storms of life come our way. When we faithfully follow Jesus’ teachings, we can have confidence that our lives will be built on a strong foundation and will not be shaken.
In addition, by following Jesus’ teachings, we can have the assurance that we will have a better future, no matter what comes our way. Ultimately, this passage of scripture reminds us that Jesus’ teachings are the key to a secure, stable, and prosperous life. We can find strength, stability, and security in Jesus and His teachings, and by faithfully following them, we can build our lives on a rock that can withstand the storms of life.
