Facing Giants And How You See Yourself

Facing giants and how you see yourself determines how others see you. This is one of the greatest lessons in the Bible. The children of Israel were severely oppressed by Pharaoh in Egypt. They cried out to the Lord, and he came down and set them free. Before the deliverance, he made a declaration. (All new things start with an announcement.)

“And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites” (Exodus 3:7-8).  

This is known as the Exodus Story, deliverance from tyranny into liberty. After the mighty confrontation and defeat of Pharaoh and his army, God led his people through the wilderness on their way to the land of more than enough. On the journey, God provided leadership through Moses, gave supernatural provision, and led them with a pillar of fire by night and a cloud by day. When they arrived at Canaan, Moses chose twelve leaders to take a look at the land of their new home. These leaders were the heads of the various tribes. They explored the land for forty days, and it was very good. It was the land of milk and honey, the land of more than enough. It was everything the Lord had promised. There was only one problem, they saw giants.

“Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan” (Numbers 13:28-29).

Reactions decide destiny. New seasons are opened or closed according to words. You already know that life and death are in the power of the tongue. These leaders took their eyes off the promise and put their eyes on Giants. Their faithless words filled the people with despair. Caleb had a different reaction. He said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it” (Numbers 13:30). Caleb was different than everybody else. His difference was revealed by his words. Your difference is what people remember about you. Your difference is revealed by your words.

Words of doubt and unbelief continued, “We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature” (Numbers 13:31-32).

Words are rudders that steer your life. Words are destinations. These men forgot how great Jehovah was. They forgot how God defeated the contentious Pharaoh and drowned his army in the Red Sea. Where was their memory? Where was their gratitude? Their faithless words created their destiny. “And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:33).

How you see yourself determines the words you speak. They saw themselves as “grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” The way you see yourself is the way others will see you. The way you see yourself is the way others will treat you. The way you see yourself is the way the enemy will attack you. The way you see yourself will form the words that come out of your mouth. As a man thinketh in his heart so is he (Proverbs 23:7). This means what you think about yourself, becomes the truth to you.

Don’t be like these faithless leaders. Focus on the promise, not the problem. God does not fear what you fear. “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19). The promises of God to you are yes and amen. You don’t need to know how God is going to bring them about, your responsibility is to sow the seed of his word and believe. He will bring it about.

The conclusion of this testimony is a lesson for all. Words are destinations. How you see yourself is important. Those faithless leaders were never able to enter the promise of God. On the other hand, Joshua and Caleb’s words created a different destination for them. “If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not” (Numbers 14:8-9).  

How you see yourself is how others see you. You are not a grasshopper. You are a mighty man of God. You are unstoppable. You can do all things through Christ that strengthens you (Philippians 4:7). Change your perspective of giants. When you see a giant rejoice, you have reached your destination. You have reached the Promised Land. Hear it, see it, say it, and believe it.
