Pastor Samuel Miller preached in New York City, July 4th, 1793 on the “Independence of America.” His opening text was “And where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17).

“Let us bless his holy name that under the influence of this light we have been led to assert the dignity of human nature, to throw off the chains of oppression, to think and act for ourselves and to acknowledge no other king that the King of the universe.

Let us bless his name, that, under the guidance of the same light, we have been led to frame a constitution, which recognizes the natural unalienable rights of men; which renounces all limits to human liberty.

Do you wish to stand fast in that liberty wherewith the Governor of the universe hath made you free? Do you desire the increasing prosperity of your country? Do you wish to see the law respected, good order preserved, and universal peace to prevail? Are you convinced that purity of morals is necessary for these important purposes? Do you believe that the Christian religion is the firmest basis of morality?

And while you tell to your children and to your children’s children, the wonderful works of the Lord, and the great deliverance which he hath wrought for us, teach them to remember the Author of thee blessings and they will know how to estimate their value. Teach them to acknowledge the God of heaven as their King and they will despise submission to earthy despots. Teach them to be Christians and they will ever be free!”

Without Christ none can be free and without His overcoming word the chains of tyranny cannot be broken.  Christ has called all his disciples to carry a reforming spirit.

I am reminded of the testimony of Peter and John that met the lame beggar at the Gate Beautiful. Peter said, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6). You cannot give someone something you don’t have yourself. The responsibility of freedom sits squarely on the pulpits of America. If we are going to hear freedom bells equipping the saints for liberty from despots, those sounds must start within our churches. Charles Finny, the great New Measures Revivalists during the Second Great Awakening, spoke of the responsibility of our preachers.

“Brethren, our preaching will bear its legitimate fruits. If immorality prevails in the land, the fault is ours in a great degree. If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discrimination, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in religion, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it. Let us not ignore this fact, my dear brethren; but let us lay it to heart, and be thoroughly awake to our responsibility in respect to the morals of this nation.”
