Necromancy is ancestor worship and it occurs in ancient cultures all over the world, even in modern times. To those that practice ancestor worship their belief is that the dead live on and in some way play a part in influencing their lives.
Their mode of worship consists of making a small altar, lighting incense, praying, presenting various gifts and making offerings. Perhaps you have seen similar altars when entering a nail salon or Chinese restaurant. Over in the corner is a small altar with incense and fruit offerings. These offerings are given to invoke the spirit of dead ancestors for protection and financial blessing. Scripture condemns this practice for Christians.
“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12)
During a crusade in a rural city in Honduras, a family was mightily touched by the power of the Holy Spirit. At this meeting, hundreds were saved and baptized in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. Afterward a family that attended the meetings invited me and our team for lunch in their Chinese restaurant. The food was outstanding, and we were able to meet more of the family members. The owners were two sisters and their husbands. The husbands were not able to stay because they had to work in another one of their restaurants in a different city. The sisters asked us to pray for their family members and restaurant workers. We agreed and were escorted through the kitchen and out the back door into the house next door. Through the back door, we went greeting the family, several relatives, and kitchen workers that had gathered themselves together in the spacious living room.
This meeting felt like a scene right out of the Bible. It reminded me of when Apostle Peter went to Cornelius' house. Cornelius was a Gentile that gathered his household together to listen to the man of God speak about Christ. Scripture records Peter's words.
"Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil for God was with him." (Acts 10:34-38)
We greeted the people, exhorted about Christ and prayed. As we prayed, I felt the anointing come on me and began to lay my hands on the people, first a young lady and then her brother. The power of God came on them and down they went under the anointing of the Holy Ghost. Peter’s meeting was the same, “While Peter yet spake these words the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God” (Acts 10:44-46).
I'm sure these people had never seen or experienced anything like this before. Others started crying lifting up their hands and worshiping Christ. The more we prayed, the stronger the anointing. It wasn't long before there were people on their knees all over the house praying and others laying on the floor out in the anointing. It was a marvelous site. The Holy Spirit was all over these young people, the workers, and restaurant owners. The spirit of prophecy fell too, and some received a prophetic word. I'm sure these young people will never forget their divine encounter with the Holy Spirit.
One man told me he was engulfed in fire when the Holy Ghost came on him. He said it was like fire coming on him and flowing out of his belly giving him an overwhelming assurance of faith in Christ as his lord and savior. He too began to speak in other tongues. John the Baptist prophesied such experiences saying, “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire” (Matthew 3:11). I ministered more along these kinds of power encounters in my audio teachings “Holy Ghost Encounters.”
There was something else worth pointing out. Over in the corner of the living room was an altar of ancestor worship. On the table were photos of the restaurant owners’ father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. There was an offering of fruit, lit candle, and burning incense. To some Christians, this demonic altar would have been a major distraction. Yet in the midst of this forbidden idolatry the Holy Spirit showed himself strong, and Jesus was lifted up. Christ said, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you" (Luke 10:19). I know these lives will never be the same again. As we were leaving the sisters committed themselves with attending the church of one of our local pastors and one asked if she could host a Bible study in her home.
Let this testimony encourage your faith. No weapon formed against you can prosper and no demon power, even those invoked through ancestor worship, can stop the power of the Holy Ghost. Scripture declares, “Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
The Apostle Paul didn’t get distracted by demonic activity. While he was ministering in Ephesus, there were many signs and wonders that confirmed the Word. Afterward, we learn this. “And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed” (Acts 19:18-20).
